Today's D:ET Rant

    <lj:music>Sick Puppies - All the Same</lj:music>

So I wrote my Box Office Results article for D:ET and, as much as I tried to avoid it, I really ranted. I think it deserves its own LJ post.

Weekend Box Office Results for 02.02 - 02.04.07:

1. The Messengers
$14.5M (Weekend), $14.5M (Gross)
2. Because I Said So
$13M (Weekend), $13M (Gross)
3. Epic Movie
$8.22M (Weekend), $29.4M (Gross)
4. Night at the Museum
$6.75M (Weekend), $225M (Gross)
5. Smokin' Aces
$6.32M (Weekend), $25M (Gross)
6. Stomp the Yard
$4.2M (Weekend), $56M (Gross)
7. Dreamgirls
$4.05M (Weekend), $92.8M (Gross)
8. Pan's Labyrinth
$3.6M (Weekend), $21.7M (Gross)
9. The Pursuit of Happyness
$3.1M (Weekend), $157M (Gross)
10. The Queen
$2.71M (Weekend), $45.5M (Gross)

I really hope this doesn't turn into a rant but it very well might. The first thing that jumps out at me about the results is how well movies did despite it being Super Bowl weekend. Audiences must have really gone out to the theaters on Friday and Saturday for the numbers to end up that high.

It's no surprise that The Messengers took the top spot in its first week out. Despite being directed by the Pang brothers (most famous for The Eye and The Eye II), I don't trust horror films that appear to be watered down for American audiences. Hopefully, I will be proven wrong but the mediocre IMDB rating says otherwise. In second place was the chick flick Because I Said So starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore (yum). Worthless.

Coming in at third was Epic Movie which brings up a very good question: How are we as a nation supposed to overcome all of this world hatred that seems to be directed towards us when the general public makes a concerted effort to spend nearly $30 million dollars on crap like this? First, Hollywood spends insane amounts of money to make movies such as Superman Returns and Harry Potter, then they finance something that SPOOFS films like that and is completely bashed by all critics. They have been doing this for years with the shitty Scary Movie series and the embarrassing 2006 release Date Movie. Now don't go me wrong, I love this country and wouldn't want to live anywhere else; I'm just saying that if I was sitting in my sand cave somewhere and was told that millions of dollars were being pumped into producing this drivel, I might have to go jihad on someone.

Night at the Museum is in the top 5 for its 7th week in a row. I have no problems with that (*gasp*). I am very surprised, however, at the 5th place finish for Smokin' Aces. It dropped from number 1 to number 5 despite critical and audience success. Yet that fucking Epic Movie...*deep breath in, slow release* I'm going to take a walk.

Link: http://www.digitalet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6012

    <lj:music>Brand New - Jesus Christ</lj:music>

This is absolutely genius and hysterical at the same time. Stolen from Nathan's myspace page:

I can't date stupid women.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect my dates to do calculus at the dinner table, but they at least need to be solid on basic knowledge, such as knowing Chicago is in the Central Time Zone. (A woman I met recently did not.)

Years ago, I began dating a woman I knew was a dumbbell, but I dealt with it because she was smokin' hot. One night I was falling asleep in her bed when she said, "That clicking noise grosses me out." She was referring to the noise coming from the radiator.

"Why would it," I asked, puzzled. She told me the clicking noise was cockroaches eating the inside of the wall. That was it. I couldn't date her anymore.

A lot of people don't like dating dummies. But such a ban can get complicated: What if the dummy is hot?

It's no mystery that people are willing to waive some of the qualities on their "wish list" if the potential partner is hot.

Intelligence is one of them. Beauty just has a way of hypnotizing people in a way that reduces their own IQ a few points.

I once dated a model who had anger-management issues, but I'd tolerate it because she was just too damn hot to dump. I finally cut her loose when she freaked out on me for eating the yogurt she left in my fridge.

Although I believe brains can be just as important as beauty, I also think that anyone who says "looks don't matter" is a liar--or a fool.

Of course looks matter! Those folks who say brains and personality are the most attractive qualities in a person might be right. But a person's brains and personality aren't what made you stare at them from across the room.

Their looks are the initial attraction. Their beauty makes you curious enough to walk over and say hello.

You ever seen a guy in a bar nudge his buddy and say, "Whoa, check out the personality on her?" Or for that matter, "Check out her brains?"

Obviously, there are exceptions to the "looks rule" rule. How else do you explain all these wrinkly rockers with their young girlfriends or wives? It's not their looks. I doubt it's even their personalities. In the case of the Rolling Stones and other zombie rockers, my guess is money is the big attraction.

But some mysteries exist. Take Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson, or Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett. Sure, Hudson/Robinson are splitting, according to her publicist, and Roberts/Lovett weren't married for long. But how'd those ugly dudes get such hot women in the first place? Both women were making enough cash on their own.

Those guys have talent, no doubt, and maybe brains or personality had something to do with the love connections they made. As for me, I'm not willing to trade brains for beauty, but then again I don't want an ugly genius either.

Short of finding someone with a perfect balance of looks and smarts, we just have to go with what feels right. If you're happy with your knockout date whose answer to 2 + 2 = potato, more power to you.

Until I find the NASA rocket scientist/hockey fan who moonlights as a lingerie model, I'll just keep on looking.

- Jon Ibrahim
